Introduction

Scripture tells us little about James son of Alphaeus. He appears in every list of the Twelve and nowhere else by that name. We never hear him speak. We know his father's name, and we know Jesus chose him.

That is not nothing. He walked the same roads as Peter and John. He heard the same teaching and saw the same miracles. When the risen Jesus ascended, James was in the room praying with the others. A quiet life inside a loud story is still a real life.

Where this points to Christ

Jesus remembers the names that history forgets.

James left almost no mark on the record, yet Jesus chose him by name and kept him to the end. The foundation of the coming city carries his name with the rest: “And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb” (). His place rests on Christ's choosing, not on his fame.
