Mary was a young woman in a small Galilean town, engaged to a carpenter named Joseph. An angel told her she would bear the Son of the Most High. She asked an honest question, how this could happen since she was a virgin. Then she said yes.
Scripture does not make her more than she was. She was a believer who needed a Savior, and she said so. She did not always understand her son. She searched for him, worried about him, and stood near his cross. She kept thinking it all through, and she was with the church at prayer after he rose.
“
Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.

Mary's story
Standing near the cross
Beginning
The angel's word
Gabriel tells her she will bear the Son of God. She asks how, then gives herself to God's word.
High point
The manger
She gives birth in Bethlehem and lays her son in a manger. When the shepherds come, she treasures up their words.
Turning point
Lost for three days
She and Joseph search Jerusalem for their twelve-year-old in great distress. She finds him in the temple and does not fully understand his answer.
High point
The wedding at Cana
She tells Jesus the wine is gone, then tells the servants to do whatever he says. His first sign follows.
Turning point
Outside the crowd
His family comes to take him home. Jesus says those who do God's will are his family. Mark does not tell us what Mary herself thought.
Low point
Near the cross
She stands by as her son dies. From the cross he gives her into the care of the disciple he loved.
Ending
With the church at prayer
After the resurrection she prays with the apostles, the women, and his brothers. This is the last time Scripture names her.
Starts as a young engaged woman in Nazareth. Ends as a disciple of her own son, praying with his church.

Why we think so
1
Receptive. She does not argue with the angel. After one honest question, she yields to God's plan. ()
2
Inward processing. Twice Luke says she treasured things up in her heart rather than speaking. ()
3
Low on self. Her song is about God and his mercy to the humble, not about herself. ()
She and Joseph do everything required by the Law of the Lord after the birth, careful and orderly. ()
The Achiever. At Cana she takes initiative, names the problem, and directs the servants to act. ()
The Loyalist. When Jesus goes missing at twelve, she searches in great distress and asks him why he treated them this way. ()
The case for 2
She serves others readily. She hurries to help her older relative Elizabeth and stays about three months (). At Cana she notices a host's need before anyone else does.

Strengths & struggles
What's good in Mary
Humble trust in God's word. Quiet reflection. Steadiness through grief. She knew the Scriptures well enough to sing them back ().
Where Mary struggles
She did not always grasp who her son was or what he came to do (). At Cana Jesus gently redirected her ().
What Mary wanted most
To see God keep his promises to Israel, and to be faithful in the part he gave her ().
What Mary feared most
Scripture doesn't say directly. Simeon warned her that a sword would pierce her own soul (), and she lived to see it.
Mary's song does not call her the source of grace. It calls God her Savior. She is honored because God looked on her humble estate, and she points away from herself to him. “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” ().
