Zephaniah traces his family four generations back to Hezekiah, almost certainly the king. That makes him a relative of King Josiah, in whose reign he preached. Judah had spent decades under Manasseh worshiping other gods, and Zephaniah warned that the great day of the LORD was near: a day of wrath, distress and darkness. God would search Jerusalem with lamps.
Yet his book ends with some of the most tender words in the prophets. God will leave a humble and lowly people who seek refuge in his name. He tells Jerusalem to sing and rejoice, because the LORD is in her midst, a mighty one who will save, who will rejoice over her with gladness, quiet her by his love, and exult over her with loud singing.
