“Do you now govern Israel?”

(ESV)

Introduction

Jezebel was a princess of Sidon, daughter of a king who was also a priest of Baal. She married Ahab and brought her gods with her. She fed hundreds of prophets of Baal and Asherah at her table and killed the prophets of the LORD. After Elijah's victory on Mount Carmel she sent him one message, and the prophet who had faced down hundreds ran for his life.

When Ahab sulked over Naboth's vineyard, she asked if he was really king, wrote letters in his name, and had Naboth falsely accused and stoned. Elijah said dogs would eat her by the wall of Jezreel. Years later, when Jehu rode in, she painted her eyes, looked down from her window, and taunted him. She was thrown down, and the word of Elijah was fulfilled.
