Ahab ruled Israel from Samaria for twenty-two years. Scripture says he did more evil than all the kings before him. He married Jezebel, a princess of Sidon, served Baal, and built him a temple. Elijah announced a drought, and on Mount Carmel Ahab watched fire fall from heaven on Elijah's altar.
He was not without moments of turning. When he wanted his neighbor Naboth's vineyard and Naboth refused, he went home, lay on his bed and would not eat. Jezebel had Naboth killed and gave him the vineyard. When Elijah met him there, Ahab tore his clothes and humbled himself, and God delayed the judgment. Later, refusing a prophet's warning, he went to battle in disguise and was killed by a random arrow.
