Introduction

Eve was made from Adam's side and brought to him by God. She is the one the serpent speaks to, and Genesis lets us watch the temptation step by step: a question about what God really said, a promise that she will not die, and a fruit that looks good, beautiful and wise.

She ate and gave some to her husband. Under the curse came a promise that her offspring would crush the serpent. Outside the garden she bore Cain and Abel, lost them both in one day, and then bore Seth, saying God had given her another child. Her life is grief and hope held together.

I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.

How Eve is wired

Why there's no type here

Where this points to Christ

Eve was promised an offspring who would crush the serpent. Jesus is that son.

God told the serpent that the woman's offspring would bruise his head (). Paul calls Jesus born of woman (), and promises that the God of peace will soon crush Satan under our feet (). Eve's hope at each birth was looking forward to him.

Questions to sit with

The temptation began with “Did God actually say?” Where is a voice making you doubt God's goodness?

Eve named Seth in hope after terrible loss. What would it look like to hope again after grief?
