Abigail was married to Nabal, a rich, harsh man whose name means fool. When David's men, who had protected Nabal's shepherds, asked for food at shearing time, Nabal insulted them. David strapped on his sword with four hundred men to wipe out his household.
A servant ran to Abigail. Without telling her husband she loaded donkeys with bread, wine, sheep, grain, raisins and figs and rode out to meet David. She fell at his feet, took the blame, and reminded him that God would make him king and he should not carry the guilt of needless bloodshed. David blessed her for her discretion and turned back. Days later the LORD struck Nabal, and David asked Abigail to be his wife.
