(ESV)

Introduction

Hosea preached in Israel's last prosperous years, before Assyria swept the northern kingdom away. God gave him a message no other prophet lived out so painfully. He was told to marry Gomer, a woman who would be unfaithful to him, and the names of their children became sermons: Jezreel, No Mercy, and Not My People.

Gomer left. Later God told Hosea to go and love her again, and he bought her back for fifteen pieces of silver and some barley. His whole book moves between heartbreak and tenderness, because that is how God speaks of Israel: betrayed, grieved, and still unwilling to let them go.

Hosea's story

Buying her back
  1. Beginning

    Told to marry

God tells him to marry Gomer, a woman who will be unfaithful, as a picture of Israel.

  2. Turning point

    Children named as warnings

Their children are named Jezreel, No Mercy, and Not My People.

  3. Low point

    She leaves

Gomer goes after other lovers. Hosea's grief becomes God's own words about Israel.

  4. Turning point

    Buying her back

God says go again, love her. He buys her back for silver and barley.

  5. Ending

    I will heal

He ends with God's promise to heal their faithlessness and love them freely.

Starts as a prophet told to marry for a message. Ends as a husband who loved again and preached God's freely given love.

Where this points to Christ

Hosea paid to bring back an unfaithful wife. Jesus paid with his life for a bride who had wandered.

Paul quotes Hosea to say that people who were not God's people are now called his people (). Hosea bought Gomer with silver and barley; Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (). The love Hosea acted out, Jesus fulfils.
