Caleb was one of twelve men Moses sent to scout Canaan. All twelve saw the same land, the same fruit and the same giants. Ten said the people were too strong. Caleb quieted the crowd and said they should go up at once. Only he and Joshua trusted God, and only they of their generation lived to enter the land.
Scripture calls him a Kenizzite, a family that joined Judah, and says he had a different spirit and followed the LORD fully. At eighty-five, after forty years in the wilderness and years of war, he asked Joshua for the hill country where the giants still lived. He took it.
