Aaron

The eloquent brother who wore the holy garments and still needed grace.

The story

God sends him into the wilderness to meet his brother. Together they tell the elders that God has seen their misery.

  2. Holding up his brother's hands

Aaron and Hur hold Moses' hands up until sunset, and Israel prevails over Amalek.

  3. The golden calf

Pressed by the people, he makes a gold calf. Confronted, he says he threw the gold in the fire and out came this calf.

  4. Ordained and grieving

He is clothed and anointed as high priest. Days later his sons Nadab and Abihu die for offering unauthorized fire, and he is silent.

  5. The staff that budded

He runs into the plague with incense, and God confirms his priesthood with a budding staff. He dies on Mount Hor.
